Become a PRAAT Team
Below is the process for becoming a PRAAT team.
PRAAT conducts screenings twice a month. One screening is held in Patchogue, NY and one is held at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook, NY. The purpose of the screening is to check a dog’s disposition, responsiveness and attitude in an unfamiliar, and facility-simulated environment. We do not look at a dog’s obedience during the screening process.
There is no charge for the screening, however, candidates who pass the screening will need to pay $20 for a background check if they decide to start the PRAAT training.
Upcoming screening dates are:
Sunday November 4th at 6PM in Patchogue.
Saturday November 17th at 6PM in Patchogue.
Saturday December 8th at 6PM in Patchogue.
If you have any additional questions, or to sign up for an upcoming screening please contact us.
Dogs that pass the screening are invited to complete a 10 week obedience training. Training classes are done in a group setting with other dog-handler teams in training. They are held once a week, on Monday evenings for an hour in Stony Brook or Patchogue. The training fee is $300. After successfully completing the training, each dog-handler team receives a PRAAT vest, collar, t-shirt, ID badge, PRAAT logo patch, PRAAT bag and lanyard. All PRAAT therapy dogs must stay up to date on all health maintenance to remain active in the program.
Upon completion of the PRAAT training program, each dog-handler team will be evaluated by the Therapy Dog Trainer in one of our contracted and insured facilities. The evaluation is as much for you as it is for your dog, and the trainer is there to ensure you and your dog are ready and comfortable to complete visits independently. After you pass the evaluation you will be sent a schedule with available visits to choose from, and you can begin conducting as many pet therapy visits you would like.
