Our Team

Dr. David Roy Hensen: Founder & Director

Dr. Dave always wanted to have a special project where animals would be a positive influence with people in our community and in 1992 he founded PRAATinc.

Graduating from veterinary school in the Dominican Republic in 1982 and in 1988, he became a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, a prestigious honor that recognizes him as a specialist in the practice of companion animal veterinary medicine. He is a member of the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association (LIVMA), New York State Veterinary Medical Society (NYSVMS), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Veterinary Ultrasound Society, and many community and conservation organizations.

Jo‐Ann Goldwasser: Doggie Reading Club Director

Jo-Ann Goldwasser, the founder and director of the Doggie Reading Club, is a retired teacher who loves dogs, children and books.  She began the Doggie Reading Club with PRAAT in 2013 and over the past years the DRC has expanded it to include 15 teams.  A team is comprised of a volunteer and his/her human. DRC teams currently volunteer in 6 school districts, 13 schools, and more than 35 classes.  In addition, the DRC visits local libraries to provide opportunities for children to read to the dogs.  The demand for the DRC continues to grow and we’re always looking to welcome new volunteers. Please e-mail Jo-Ann at jogold4311@gmail.com for more information.

Cindy Amodio: Administrator Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator

Cindy Amodio, the PRAAT Administrative Assistant oversees and makes sure everything runs smoothly (training, visits, clerical, working with the volunteers and facilities).  Plus she understands this from the volunteer role, as well, as she has personally completed over 2000 PRAAT visits since 1992.  Cindy says, “It’s always a pleasure and very uplifting to visit people with my dog.  When we visit with the residents they smile and feel better plus I am elated when we leave.  Not only are we giving to people that need inspiration but we get to show everyone the best part of our dogs.”

Sonnie Goldman: Trainer/Evaluator

Sonnie has been volunteering with PRAAT for more than 20 years and specializes in canine behavior and obedience training.  Dogs have always been a huge part of her life and she enjoys fulfilling her passion for dogs as a PRAAT trainer.  Dog and puppy training starts with two willing partners and if you’re not laughing with your dog, you’re most likely not having much fun.  She helps our volunteers bring the joy back into their dog training experience.

Debbie Fischer: Medical Records

Debbie became involved with PRAAT in 1995 volunteering with her chocolate Labrador Koda.  Since then, she has become an important part of PRAAT doing clerical work and problem solving. Currently she volunteers with her dog, Chip and enjoys going to facilities to make people smile!
